Rampage Round 2 Report
Steve Jones - Mon Jul 2, 2007 12:11:00
Despite the weekends awful weeather the race went ahead as planned despite the late start due to the access problems. That was due to onee of the householders on the by-way access to the farm that took objection to the cars going past his house which were disturbing his Sunday morning. He chose to re-arrange all our road signs in the rain and then sit in his car with it blocking the road for half an hour. Shame he had nothing better to do really and was happier trying to ruin everyone else's fun, what a cupid stunt!

The fields were waterlogged and the woods muddy but the riders all enjoyed the challenging conditions. Mark Cracknell and Scott Chappell set off into the lead in the Racing category but Chris Minter took his customary steady start and was confidently making his way through the pack. Once Chris made contact with the 2 leaders the 3 of them set about extending their lead. Nick Onslow was chasing in 4th but couldn't make it across to the lead group. Behind Nick Mike Warner and Mike Groves were battling round on their cross bikes.

Chris made his move on the 2nd lap and dropped Mark and Scott who were left to fight it out for 2nd. Scott got in front the last time up the farm track and Mark couldn't get by in the singletrack and had to settle for 3rd this time.

Tom Robbins led the Club race for most of the race but lost time on the last lap when his bike was getting too clogged up. Steve Shaw was closest of the chasers and took advantage of Tom's misfortune to take the win.

Nick Wallace was the only Fun rider so he started with the Club riders. In only his 2nd race he did well to stay mid pack amongst the more experienced club riders.

In the ladies race it was like a Pedal On club ride with all 3 riders from the same team. They must have had a pact as the start was very leisureley with lots of chatting going on. They all stuck together for the first lap when Mandy Hibberd decided it was time to get serious and she rode away to take the win.

There was a problem with the Club results shown last night and some riders being shown as DNF. This is because we ran it as a timed event and we gave the bell for the final lap to the Racing category leaders and some of the Club riders stopped or were told the race was over after the Racing winners had finished. However their race leader was still on the course and really they should have continued onto their 5th lap and finished behind him. The system sees their finish time as earlier than the finisher and puts them in as a dnf. The riders who did a lap less than the leader but finished later than his time showed as 1 lap down.

I don't think it can be corrected and the timing system designer is away all this week. As a temporary fix I have moved all the Club entrants to a new 5 lap race but it now puts all 4 lap riders as dnf but this time they are in the correct order so I can allocate series points correctly.

Now we have a good idea of lap times of the new extended Park Wood circuit I think we can safely go over to fixed lap races for the rest of the series, 5 laps for Racing, Club & Women and 4 laps for Fun.
